چکیده

THINNING overdense stands to improve growth rate of trees is one way in which the nation's supply of merchantable timber can be increased significantly.' In the Pacific Northwest alone, several million acres of such dense precommercial stands would benefit from thinning. Two basic methods are used to thin dense forest stands—felling unwanted trees with saws or killing them with chemicals. Economics aside, thinning by felling concentrates slash on the ground and presents a fire hazard, unsightly appearance, and decreased access to forage for livestock and game animals. Chemically killed trees are left standing. The leaves or needles fall first, then the branches, and eventually the stems. Chemical thinning allows better use of for-

Arsenic in blood and urine of forest workers as indices of exposure to cacodylic acid.

Five healthy forest workers exposed to cacodylic acid during a two-month period were observed for evidence of accumulation of arsenic in the blood, the pattern of Its urinary excretion, and signs of clinical toxicity. Urinary arsenic appeared to constitute an index of exposure, with excretion levels increasing within one week. Blood levels wrre found to correlate poorly with exposure. Worker ed...

Assessment of occupational exposure to inorganic arsenic based on urinary concentrations and speciation of arsenic.

An analytical speciation method, capable of separating inorganic arsenic (As (V), As (III] and its methylated metabolites (MMAA, DMAA) from common, inert, dietary organoarsenicals, was applied to the determination of arsenic in urine from a variety of workers occupationally exposed to inorganic arsenic compounds. Mean urinary arsenic (As (V) + As (III) + MMAA + DMAA) concentrations ranged from ...

Airborne arsenic exposure and excretion of methylated arsenic compounds.

First void urine samples were collected from copper smelter workers exposed to inorganic arsenic and from unexposed controls. Arsenic compounds (As (III), As (V), methylarsonic acid and dimethylarsinic acid) in these samples were analyzed by selective volatilization as arsines with determination of arsenic by plasma excitation emission spectrometry. On the day preceding the urine sample collect...

Some aspects of the environmental exposure to arsenic in Romania.

The main sources of arsenic emission in Romania are ore smelters and refineries. Arsenic determinations were carried out by the silver diethyldithiocarbamate spectrophotometric method on hair and urine samples taken from smelter workers and individuals residing in two polluted areas and three areas not polluted by arsenic. Arsenic in hair was found to be a more reliable biologic test than tests...

Do people from Taiwan have higher heavy metal levels than those from Western countries?

INTRODUCTION This study investigated whether heavy metal levels were higher in people from Taiwan as compared to those from Western countries. METHODS We measured the level of heavy metals (lead, mercury, arsenic and cadmium) in the blood of 40 apparently healthy adults. Since mercury does not respond to ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid (EDTA) infusion, only urine lead, arsenic and cadmium lev...
